Urgent message for parents of behalf of Carmarthenshire Education and Children’s Services Department.
Schools have and continue to work closely and effectively with pupils to ensure that they are supported in their learning and well-being. It is therefore a significant concern that numerous fake social media accounts have been created, targeting unacceptable comments towards schools and individuals.
The content of these false accounts are completely inappropriate and a cause for concern.
Schools have reported that the vast majority of pupils have displayed a mature attitude and shown their displeasure with this content. Dyfed Powys Police will continue to work with schools to further increase awareness of the impact of harmful content and the consequences of such actions.
We kindly ask that parents/carers discuss the appropriate use of social media with their children and continue to support schools in promoting respect and kindness.
It must be noted that in terms of the law everyone over the age of 10 is criminally responsible. Children over the age of 10 can be arrested and taken to court if they commit an offence.

Have your say on council’s Welsh language plan for schools.
Have your say on the future of bilingual education in Carmarthenshire for the next 10 years.
Carmarthenshire County Council has launched a public consultation to gather views on its draft Welsh in Education Strategic Plan (WESP).
The plan, which is required by law for all local authorities in Wales, sets out the council’s vision on how we will develop Welsh language provision in our schools from 2022-2032, based on outcomes and targets set by Welsh Government.
Find out more and give your views https://www.carmarthenshire.gov.wales/home/council-services/education-schools/bilingual-education/welsh-in-education-strategic-plan-wesp/

Welsh Government schools update
Welsh Government Education Minister Kirsty Williams today (February 22) confirmed that if conditions continue to improve over the next three weeks all primary aged children can start to return to their classrooms from March 15.
At the same time, learners in years 11 and 13, and those doing similar qualifications in colleges, will be able to return to face-to-face learning in a safe and flexible way.
Where possible, they also want to give some flexibility around other learners, such as Year 12 and those in Year 10 who may also have been entered for qualifications this summer. Unfortunately, this won’t necessarily be a return to full-time on-site learning.
She also confirmed that twice-weekly testing would be extended to older learners in years 11 to 13 and those in Further Education settings, as well as education staff. Testing will be done through lateral flow devices, which means they can be done from learners’ homes which will assist with the planned return of older pupils from March 15.
The situation for other learners will be confirmed before the Easter holidays, but it is hoped to get all learners back in school after that break.

You are invited to participate in a study for the Welsh Government to determine the immediate and long-term effects of COVID-19 on children’s mental health, well-being and physical activity levels.. It involves completing an online survey and some children will be asked to wear a monitor (like a FitBit) on their wrist for a week. The study will give the Welsh government insight into how COVID-19 has affected children’s physical activity levels and their mental health and wellbeing. It will provide the government with important information on how to deal with COVID-19 for children going forward. Information about the study can be found here. The information sheet provides details of the study, data protection, anonymity, confidentiality as well as our contact details in case you have any questions. If you agree for your child to take part in our study, please click on the survey link: https://swansea.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/the-effects-of-covid-19-on-childlren

As you may be aware there are new rules in place for wearing of masks in and around education settings.
Pupils in Key Stage 3 (age 11) and higher are now being encouraged to wear masks outside of the classroom, in communal areas such as corridors, play grounds and where they are not able to socially distance.
We will be providing each pupil with a set of 2 reusable masks from today and we will be encouraging them to wear them when needed. For the safety of our pupils, staff and all our families we would ask that you support this. If there is a situation where a pupil is unable to wear a mask for a reason then please contact your child’s class teacher directly.
Thank you for your support as we work together to try and make sure everyone has a safe and healthy Christmas that they can share with their loved ones.
Kind regards,
Miss Hopkins

A message from Carmarthenshire’s Chief Executive: Wendy Walters
As you’ll no doubt be aware, the Welsh Government has today announced that a new set of ‘fire-break’ measures will come into force at 6pm on Friday October 23, until the start of Monday November 9, in efforts to control the spread of Covid-19.
This will mean the return of many restrictions, which will impact on some of our services. We are currently working through the detail of this, and you will shortly hear from your management team with information relevant to your service area. We appreciate you will have questions and may be feeling concerned - please be assured that we will do everything we can to support you.
We are currently updating our website and intranet with information about how the fire-break will affect services in Carmarthenshire. Please check regularly for updates.
There is also plenty of information and a list of frequently asked questions on the Welsh Government website:
As a team, we have worked exceptionally since March to support our communities in extremely challenging circumstances - what I have seen is remarkable team spirit, and of that we can all be proud. I am fully confident that with your continued commitment we will rise to the challenge yet again.
........
On Thursday October 15th, we will be wearing yellow to raise awareness of young people’s mental health.
In assembly, classes will be sharing ideas of how to make people feel better if they are sad, scared, worried etc.
Join us in wearing yellow for this worthy cause. 💛💛💛

Advice regarding 'Fever' after a Flu Vaccine
Following a number of queries from Schools and Families, Public Health Wales have provided the following advice regarding possible fever following a flu vaccination.
Advice regarding fever after a vaccine:
Any vaccine may cause a mild fever (normally less than 38°C) which usually resolves within 24-48 hours for most vaccines. This includes flu vaccines. As post vaccination fever is a common and expected reaction, isolation and COVID-19 testing is not usually required unless other symptoms mean COVID-19 is suspected.
A FAQ has now been posted on this page http://www.immunisation.wales.nhs.uk/faqs-covid-19 and contains further information.
2020 Child flu vaccine animations have also been created:
The animated flu vaccine video, originally launched at the 2020 Annual Influenza Programme Meeting, has now been updated to include references to COVID-19.
You may wish to show these videos to pupils prior to them having their planned flu vaccination. Although the video is aimed at primary school pupils, it is also a useful tool to share with parents as they may wish to watch the video with their child.

Our New Headteacher
The Governing Body is delighted to announce the appointment of Miss Ceri Hopkins as our new headteacher. This follows a comprehensive selection process from a strong field of candidates. Ceri will take over from Nikki Symmons in November, after the Autumn half term break. Ceri is currently deputy headteacher in Ysgol Pen-y-bryn Special school in Swansea and she will be responsible for leading Ysgol Heol Goffa through another exciting chapter in our history. Plans and designs are progressing for the new school and the public consultation process will continue at the beginning of the Autumn term after being disrupted by the Coronovirus pandemic. Chair of Governors Owen Jenkins said: "Ceri brings with her a wealth of experience in special education and the whole school community looks forward to working with her to build on the exceptional standards and provision set by Nikki and the whole staff."
Ceri Hopkins said: " I have heard many wonderful things about the pupils, staff and community of Heol Goffa and I am looking forward to developing relationships with you all and building on the excellent practice that already exists. I will continue to drive Heol Goffa forward as a school that is known not just locally but across Wales and further afield as a centre of excellence where every single pupil is given the very best learning experiences, opportunities and skills to equip them to lead as happy, healthy and independent a life as possible."
The Governing body would also like to take this opportunity to once again thank the whole staff for the dedication, commitment and resilience they have shown and are still showing during the pandemic to support our children and their families whilst operating as a hub and when we opened towards the end of term. May we also thank all our wonderful parents and families for the support they have given not only for their children but also for the staff during this difficult period. Now that the new term is upon us , I'm sure there will be further challenges ahead. Our thanks and appreciation go to Nikki for delaying her retirement to provide us with the crucial transition and experience which will be vital for everyone to settle in to the new term.
Here is a copy of our Home School Agreement document.
Please sign and return to school ASAP. Many thanks.
